The Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music („Gymnasium” and „Conservatoire”) is the oldest institute in Hungary at this level of education, being founded in 1840, at Pest-Buda, with 75 freshmen. The biggest donation arrived from Ferenc Liszt, world-famous composer and piano player who played in two concerts for the good of the new school. Till the foundation of the Hungarian Academy of Music (in 1875) this school has been the most prestigious institute for musical education of the country. In 1990 the School was joined to the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music to serve with a practical placement possibility for future teachers of music.
